The New Museum is a leading cultural destination for global contemporary art in New York City and worldwide with a distinctive mission of “New Art, New Ideas”.  The Museum has a current annual operating budget of $13M and is in the midst of an $85M capital campaign for a new 55,000 square foot expansion that will double the Museum’s size. The new facility is designed by the Pritzker Prize winning architect Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigamatsu of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), and will be adjacent and connected to the museum’s current building.  The expansion signals a new era of growth and achievement for the New Museum.

The Museum is seeking an accomplished financial professional as their Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) to oversee the finances, financial planning and human resources during this period of growth and expansion, continuing to strengthen the museum’s business and financial position.  Reporting to the Museum’s Director, the DFA is a key member of the seven-person senior management team and works closely with the Director and COO as a trusted partner as well as with the Department Heads and members of the Board of Trustees to develop and implement key budget strategies. The DFA must advocate for high standards in the workplace environment, help build the potential earned income areas and envision new sources of income for the future. The DFA is also responsible for insuring the Museum’s compliance with government and legal regulations.  The candidate should embrace the Museum’s mission and fit well within a museum culture that values innovation and creativity but also pragmatism, accuracy, and high standards of performance and personal conduct.

S/he is responsible for directly supervising the Finance and Administration Department staff of four that includes the Controller, Staff Accountant, Payroll Manager, and Administrative and Accounting Assistant who performs accounting, human resources, and office management functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all financial planning, budget production, financial reporting and accounting, long- and short-term budgeting for Museum operations as well as capital projects with an eye to measuring resource allocation in relation to mission and goals and forward projection. Participates in long-term strategic financial planning. Monitors and regularly reports key metrics.
  • Develops and maintains financial systems, controls and reconciliations. Produces monthly budget reports for senior management team and department heads, monitors and holds staff accountable for budget management, anticipates and identifies areas of potential budget variance and recommends corrective action to meet budget goals.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and presents these to Finance, Investment and Audit Committees as applicable. Primary liaison with Finance Committee and Committee Chair.
  • Conducts operational cash flow analysis, produces multi-year projections, and strategic plan budgets.
  • Oversees accounting procedures to ensure GAAP and other regulatory compliance; supervises annual audit and tax filing.
  • Provides meaningful and timely information. Ensures that key transaction systems—like admission, membership, NEW INC registration, and store sales—are efficiently and fully implemented and that department staff managing these systems are proficient.
  • Oversees management of endowment and cash reserves, and monitors and reports on investment performance.
  • Monitors and analyzes retail operations and other earned income streams, provides support to staff to increase efficiency and effectiveness of earned income.
  • Oversees human resource programs, staff policies, staff benefit programs, and employee insurance coverage.
  • Reviews contracts and manages legal affairs. Works on legal contracts, lawsuits, and disputes when applicable.
  • Works with Development Department to manage revenue goals and prepare financial reports for grants and funding agencies.
  • Manages all Museum’s commercial insurance needs.
  • Capital projects budgeting, cash flow analysis and updates, and ongoing budget monitoring.
  • Maintain contacts with peers in the field to keep abreast of best practices and current issues.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished finance officer with a proven record of building sustainable, productive accounting systems. S/he must have excellent management and organizational skills and excellent communication skills both written and oral, as well as demonstrated presentation and interpersonal skills. Non- profit cultural or organizational experience is strongly preferred.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline required. CPA or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, supervisory, planning and analytical skills, including Spreadsheet, Excel, charting and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Abila MIP, Raisers Edge, and ADP Workforce Now programs preferred.
